Viewing the April 8th Solar Eclipse from Ft. Myers and Southwest Florida
The SouthWest Florida Astronomical Society, Inc. will have telescopes set up for free observing of the Partial Solar Eclipse on Monday April 8th in Centennial Park in Downtown Fort Myers. (West Side of the park by the Pavilion). The telescopes have special filters to allow safe observing of the sun. We will also have a limited supply of free Solar Eclipse glasses and viewers. Additionally, astronomy related handouts/projects for all ages will also be available.
The eclipse’s first contact is at 1:44 pm with mid eclipse (about 50% covered) occurring at 3:00 pm and last contact is at 4:14 pm.
SouthWest Florida Astronomical Society, Inc. is a 501c3 organization founded in 1980. One of our major goals is presenting astronomy to the public. We meet on the first Thursday of the month at 7:00 pm at the Calusa Nature Center Planetarium in Fort Myers. SEAHAWK STAR PARTIES Typically the best time in Southwest Florida for star parties is from September - May but if we see an available weather window, we'll announce it here and on our email lists.
BIG CYPRESS NIGHT SKY PROGRAMS The Rangers at Big Cypress present frequent dark sky programs. Many times our experienced members partner with the Rangers to present these programs. Club members are always invited to attend the programs.
